The voice is the sound of air forced out of your lungs which passes over your vocal chords. The vibration of vocal chords is what produces speech. Vocal chords are the two folds of tissue inside your larynx, which is called the voice box. Any interference with these vocal chords or muscles could possibly cause a voice disorder.

Voice loss can be caused by a variety of things. However, we would like to focus on when it's mostly the effect/side-effect of a disease or trauma. Some diseases that can lead to voice loss are:  ALS, Fragile X, Prader-Willi Syndrome, Huntingtons, Rett, and much more. Voice loss can also be caused by physical trauma, such as stroke, brain injury, tumors, and Cerebral Palsy. It will be a long time before these diseases are cured.  We hope to educate and get people interested in solving these so that we no longer have these issues. In the meantime, we also hope to help these people gain their voice back. Some possible causes of voice disorder can be:

ALS: ALS is a disease that destroys the neurons that control your muscles. This is why eventually you will lose your voice. It is eventually because  ALS is a fairly slow moving disease and your muscles deteriorate over a long period of time.

Aphasia: Aphasia is a disease where your brain knows what you want to say but you're unable to say it. This is because there is damage to the language center of your brain.

Apraxia: When you have apraxia it means you have a damaged nervous system which directly affects your speech. You have trouble annunciating and pronouncing words. This is not only a genetic cause but it also can be caused by head trauma and brain tumors.

Fragile X is an inherited disease which can cause intellectual disability, learning and challenges in behavior, and sometimes seizures. It tends to be more severe in boys than in girls because of the X chromosome, which explains why the name of the disease is Fragile X. Fragile X syndrome can cause a child to become severely anxious or afraid. Fragile X syndrome is a rare  disease which affects 1 in 5000 people. It happens when a single gene, FMR1, on the long arm of the X chromosome, stops operating and fails to produce a protein, FMRP, which is essential for normal brain development.

Cerebral Palsy: Cerebral Palsy is a condition that can make you shake. Most people who have it cannot walk, though some can. It damages your nervous system making it hard to talk. It is not a genetic disease. It cannot be caught or inherited. It is simply a result of some sort of physical trauma.

Dysarthria: Dysarthria is caused by damage to the brain. This may happen at birth, like in cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy, or can occur later in life because of one of many different conditions that impact the nervous system.
